Advice to help businesses tackle cybercrime

Posted On: Monday 27 November 2017

Business owners wanting to protect themselves from cyber criminals are being invited to attend a free information and advice event in Chatteris next month.

Fenland for Business, the economic arm of Fenland District Council, has organised the event to help businesses stay ahead of the game when it comes to internet security.

Cambridgeshire Constabulary has been invited to give a talk on how to prevent cybercrime at the South Fens Business Centre in Chatteris on December 5, from 10.30am to 12pm.

The talk will help businesses learn what cybercrime is, how they can protect themselves from common threats and what additional support is available to help organisations safeguard themselves.

In 2016 alone, incidents of fraud cost the UK £193 billion, with one in ten people becoming a victim of a cybercrime in the same period.

Analysis by the Federation for Small Businesses also suggests smaller firms are collectively attacked seven million times per year, costing the UK economy an estimated £5.26 billion.

Rebecca Tinsley, Cybersecurity Advisor from Cambridgeshire Constabulary, will be giving the talk.

She said: “It is important that businesses understand that cybercrime is constantly evolving and it is now no longer a case of ‘if’ but ‘when’ they become a target of a cybercriminal. To help them combat this threat it is important that they understand how cybercrime works, the forms it can take, and where they can go to obtain free, impartial and reliable advice that they can use to make their businesses more resilient.”

With 80% of cybercrime being preventable, Cambridgeshire Constabulary is working hard to assist local organisations to increase their cyber resilience.

Cllr Ralph Butcher, Fenland District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Business, said “Digital activity is such an integral part of business but as research shows, small businesses are adversely affected by cybercrime. There are a hundreds of thriving small businesses across Fenland and we’re delighted to be working with Cambridgeshire Constabulary so local companies can safeguard themselves, and their customers, against cybercrime.”

The event is part of a series of informative networking sessions organised by Fenland for Business aimed at helping businesses network and discuss local business issues with expert speakers.
