Supporting agriculture and rural business in Fenland

Posted On: Tuesday 17 October 2017

Funding and support for agricultural and rural businesses will be the focus of the next free networking event in Chatteris.

Fenland for Business, the economic development arm of Fenland District Council, will be holding the bi-monthly event at the South Fens Business Centre on October 31 from 10am to 12.30pm.

The event, entitled ‘Agri-Food Success in Fenland’, will offer an informal networking opportunity with talks on specialist support available for rural and agricultural organisations. Speakers include:

  • The Eastern Agri-tech Initiative – which offers grants of between £10,000 and £150,000 to support product development, agricultural productivity, research, development and prototyping.
  • The LEADER programme – a £1.45 million grant funding pot for rural businesses, farmers, land managers and communities.
  • The Country Land and Business Association (CLA) – advice on how landowners and agricultural companies could improve profitability by using their land for different purposes.

James Palmer, Mayor of the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority, will also be addressing guests on his work in Fenland.

He said: “I’m delighted to have the opportunity to talk to local business professionals about how Fenland will benefit from the Combined Authority’s work.

“My team and I are keen to listen to, and discuss, local issues so we can continue to identify ways to support Fenland’s economy and open up more possibilities for businesses.”

Cllr Ralph Butcher, portfolio holder for growth at Fenland District Council, said: “I’m pleased to see so many speakers relating to agriculture at the event. As one of Fenland’s most established sectors it’s important we help spread the word about the grant funding available so these organisations continue to grow, adapt and thrive across our region. I’d also encourage anyone attending to talk with a member of the Fenland for Business team to discuss any challenges or opportunities.

“We will also be pleased to welcome Mayor Palmer to this event. He has committed to several projects that will have a profound effect on the local economy and I’m sure that Fenland’s businesses will be keen to hear more about the district’s role within the Combined Authority.”

The event is free to attend, but delegates are encouraged to register ahead of the event. To register a free place please visit the eventbrite listing.
